Cornhill Castle sits just outside Biggar in South Lanarkshire, looking out over River Clyde with Tinto Hill just behind it. It’s always so welcoming, arriving along the long, winding, tree-lined drive, with the castle coming into view right at the end. It’s one of the most distinctive wedding venues in central Scotland, and a place I always love coming back to.
Getting ready at the castle
Morning prep at Cornhill has a lovely feel to it. The beautiful Dunrobin suite, the big, stained glass windows looking out over the countryside, and the cosy feel throughout always creates a really welcoming environment. The morning with Lucy and her bridal party was relaxed and calm, with everyone in the best of spirits.
The ceremony in the Pavilion
Lucy and Matthew married in the newly refurbished Pavilion, the light, glass-roofed ceremony space just next to the castle. Lucy walked in under a beautiful blanket of white drapes wrapped in greenery, with Matthew doing his best to keep his eyes dry. The best thing about the space now, from a photographer’s point of view, is the light. The glass roof fills the whole room with soft daylight, regardless of the weather outside. This makes it one of the best ceremony spaces for light and I can stay quietly around the edges to get all the best bits.
Drinks, photos and into the evening celebrations
After the ceremony, everyone spilled out into the grounds for drinks and some group photos. Cornhill is brilliant for photos. There’s the castle itself, the gardens, the long driveway and those views across the Clyde valley. I didn’t have to go far for Lucy and Matthew’s couple photos. The light through the trees in the driveway is one of my favourite spots and I love how the colours change here through the seasons.
Thinking about getting married at Cornhill Castle?
Cornhill is only around 45 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh. It has multiple beuatiful bedrooms in the castle itself, so the two of you and your closest people can stay over. For photography, there is so many beautiful spots inside and outside so it works in any season, and I’ve photographed weddings there in summer sunshine and in the middle of December.
If you’re planning a wedding at Cornhill Castle, or anywhere in South Lanarkshire, I’d love to hear about your plans.
