Getting Married at Citation? Here's What to Expect From a Photography Perspective

There's a reason Citation is one of Glasgow's most popular wedding venues, and it's not just the sandstone columns (although they don't hurt). Tucked away in the heart of Merchant City, this former Sheriff Court building has everything going for it when it comes to wedding photography: incredible natural light, gorgeous architecture, and enough character to fill an album on its own.

I've photographed weddings at Citation several times now, and every single one has felt completely different. That's the beauty of the place - it adapts to whatever energy the couple brings. Big party? The Taverne Bar comes alive. Intimate ceremony? The Merchant Suite feels like it was built for quiet, meaningful moments.

Why Citation works so well for photography

The thing I love most about shooting here is the light. The Merchant Suite on the first floor has these big windows that flood the room with soft, natural light - perfect for ceremony shots and candid moments during the speeches. You're not fighting against harsh overhead lighting or dark corners.

The exposed blonde sandstone walls give everything a warm, timeless feel in photographs. Whether you're going for colour or black and white, the tones are beautiful. And because Citation is exclusive use, you've got the run of the place without random members of the public wandering into your shots.

Outside, the terrace area with those iconic columns is a cracking spot for couple portraits. You're right in the middle of Merchant City, so if you fancy a wander for photos, you've got cobbled streets, interesting architecture and great light just a few steps away. I'd always recommend building in 20 minutes or so for a relaxed walk around the area. It's one of Glasgow's most photogenic spots and it means we're not disappearing from the party for hours!

The practical bits

Getting ready: A lot of couples choose to get ready at a nearby hotel and head over for the ceremony, but there is a private area at the venue that works well for final touches.

Ceremony: The Merchant Suite is where most ceremonies happen, and it photographs beautifully. The layout means I can move around easily without getting in anyone's way, which is exactly how it should be.

The party: Once the Taverne Bar gets going in the evening, the atmosphere shifts completely. The LED lighting, the grand piano in the corner, the dance floor - it's made for a good time. And from a photography point of view, the varied lighting creates some really atmospheric evening shots.

A few tips if you're considering Citation

  • Book your ceremony time wisely. An early-to-mid afternoon ceremony gives you the best natural light for photos and means you've got time for a relaxed walk around Merchant City before dinner.

  • Make the most of the terrace. Even in winter, those fairy-lit columns look stunning and make for gorgeous evening portraits.

  • Don't stress about rain. There's more than enough to work with inside. The staircase, the sandstone walls, the window light. Some of my favourite shots from Citation weddings have been in and around the building.
